Shout out to the good sis, Dr. Gladys West, for keeping us on the right track since 1956. Born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia 1931, Dr. West set her sights on education. She knew it would be the only way to escape the tobacco, cotton, and corn fields of Virginia. Dr. West worked hard, graduating top of her high school class and receiving a full scholarship to Virginia State College. In 1956 Dr. West became 1 of only 2 Black women employed at the Naval Service Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. Here is where she conducted her work with satellites that led to the development of the Global Positioning System (GPS) most of us can’t live without.
