Today we recognize Jean-Baptiste Pointe Du Sable. Jean-Baptiste was a black, pioneer, trader, and founder of Chicago.

He was born in Haiti, around 1745, as a free man to his French father and Black mother. In 1770 he moved to the Great Lakes area near what is now known as the mouth of the Chicago river. He traded there for 20 years becoming regions most important grain and trading post. Around 1800 he moved to what is now St. Charles Missouri and worked as a farmer until his death in 1818.
