Benjamin Banneker

Today we are going to shed some light on an astronomer, author, scientist, and clock maker. I would have sent this earlier but I lost track of…time. 👀. 😂.

Benjamin Banneker was born in 1731, free not enslaved, in Baltimore during the midst of the revolutionary war. He was a self taught astronomer, author, and scientist. However, he never formally attended school but he borrowed books when he could to facilitate his learning. Benjamin is most notably known for a clock he built that kept excellent time for over FOURTY years. According to my research, 🤓, clocks were very rare at this time in America. Benjamin Banneker took a watch, created detailed drawings, and built a working wooden clock. But building clocks was not his only claim to fame. Banneker was also into astronomy and land surveying. Because he was skilled at surveying he was hired to survey the land and design the layout for Washington D.C. as the new capitol city for the United States.

So yes you can thank a black man for Capitol Hill. ✊🏾 HBHM 🕰
