The Real McCoy

Elijah McCoy was a 19th century, African American inventor. His legacy consists of 57 patents including the portable ironing board and the lawn sprinkler. 50 out of 57 of his patents were centered around improving lubricating engines of trains and steamboats to help them run more efficiently.

McCoy’s patents were so prolific railroad engineers would ask for his work by name. Railroad engineers would request “The real McCoy” to avoid any inferior imposters.
