Dr. Patricia Bath was born in Harlem NY in 1942. She completed high school in TWO years and eventually made her way to Howard University Medical School. Dr. Patricia Bath was the first African American to complete a residency of ophthalmology. She was the first FEMALE faculty member in the department of ophthalmology at UCLA. She was ALSO the first African American woman to receive a medical patent. The good sis is international, laying claim to patents in Japan, Canada, and Europe. We can thank the queen of firsts for her work to advance the treatment of cataracts with her invention of the Laserphaco Probe in 1988. Dr. Baths work helped to give sight to people who had been blind for over 30 years.
