Dr. Vivian Thomas is known for his groundbreaking work in cardiology. Dr. Thomas worked as a technician at Vanderbilt University Hospital only AFTER the stock market crash forced him to leave Vanderbilt University as a student. He later worked at Johns Hopkins University. Although he worked as a technician he still had the mind of a surgeon. During his time as a “technician” Dr. Thomas ended up developing a life saving surgery to cure blue baby syndrome. Never formally educated as a doctor, Dr. Thomas worked under Dr. Alfred Blalock and never received the real credit he deserved for his life saving work. Even though he was performing the work of a surgeon he was only classified as a janitor. It wasn’t until late in his life, in 1976, that Johns Hopkins gave Dr. Thomas his honorary doctorate. He was later appointed to faculty in 1979.
