The Blacker the College the Sweeter the Knowledge

Yesterday I mentioned to my coworker that I attended HBCU’s Tuskegee University AND Alabama A&M University and he was so intrigued as to what HBCUs were he asked me again today! So today it’s only right that we give a moment of recognition to Historically Black Colleges and Universities. The first colleges for African Americans were established with a lot of support from the Black church and the main focus of the early institution was to train teachers and preachers as well as provide primary education to African Americans who weren’t able to receive proper education because of slavery and what not. Around the early 1900’s the focus was shifted to promote scholarship and showcase Black intellectual thought. The Institute for Colored Youth, established 1837 in Cheney Pennsylvania, was the first institution of higher education for Blacks, and there are are currently 101 HBCUs still around today.
